Oakland County Health Officials Confirm Another Case Of Rabies In Dead Skunk
WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. (WWJ) -- Another case of rabies in a dead animal has been reported in Oakland County.
The Oakland County Health Division says they confirmed a case of the disease in a dead skunk removed from the area of West 14 Mile Road, south of Maple Road, between Drake and Farmington Roads in West Bloomfield this week.
Officials say rabies has now been confirmed in 11 skunks and four bats in Oakland County this year.
Bats and skunks are the most common carriers of rabies in Michigan. Residents are urged to stay away from wild animals such as skunks, bats, raccoons, foxes and stray cats and dogs. If you see a wild animal behaving strangely, you should contact animal control.
If you or your household pet is bitten by any wild animal or an animal unknown to you, wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water and seek medical or veterinary attention immediately.
"Rabies is a fatal disease and there is no known cure. The best protection is to avoid contact with stray, wild, and dead animals," Oakland County health officer Leigh-Anne Stafford said in a statement. "Help keep pets protected by getting them vaccinated and avoiding encounters with unfamiliar animals."
A map detailing confirmed cases of rabies shows five skunks and a bat have been verified in Southfield, while single cases of rabies have been confirmed in nine other Oakland County locations.
